Contorted white flowering quince - Chaenomeles hybrid

Waiting for drizzling rain to stop.
Sept 2016 picked up this contorted white flowering quince from a nursery going out of business. Overgrown and tight in a 2 gallon pot. I moved it to a 3 gallon pot right away, removed most of the suckers and worked the roots some. Didn't do much pruning, most work was below ground. Photos from a few weeks ago. It was labeled red, but obviously it was the white.

Well, white inside the flower, pink on backside of flowers. I like it.

Since it was raining, and I don't like working the blueberry patch in the rain (I'm a wuss) today I decided to do a hard pruning. It was a tangled mess, hard to decide what stays or goes, so any branch that did not have a section with contorted growth was removed. In theory it could be a single trunk, but it is throwing many suckers to replace the ones removed in September, so it will likely be a clump style down the road.

Not the best photos, I'm in the trailer on the farm. Better shots once rain stops. Rain is good for the blueberries. We had no damage from the late frosts this year, so might be a good year.











One of the two main branches will be the tree, the other will eventually be removed. Going to cut flush an seal that big stub on the trunk. Hopefully lots of back budding and growth this summer and autumn.

I prefer the right trunk in the last picture. It has more movement. The left branch has that long straight section, and you would lose all of the size of the branch if you cut it back.

Plan is for clump style, the short sticks around the base are suckers from the roots, they were too straight, so I shortened them to one or two nodes.

Eventually I'll shorten the 2 long branches. In summer 2016 it was a dense bush, I'm going to let it grow out, planning on selective pruning late summer, August, and hard pruning after blooming each year.
