Thought I post up a thread of dealing with the forming the apex of a tree
when styling. I think this seems to be a point where often people struggle
with. So, I thought I would post up a cool trick I have learned through wiring
a lot of trees...
Sorry in advance that my crude and fast sketches aren't better... But here goes.
(tried to upload pics, but doesn't seem to be working)
The trick is that you are going to form almost a circle at the top, which when allowed
to grow after will set up that perfectly round crown.
You will first need to wire the apex going straight up, as if you are putting up a leader.
Before doing this, figure out what side of the top, the branch you will be making the apex
with, has stronger secondary growing branches, or better foliage. The idea being that you
want this stronger growth on the outside of the bend. These will make up the exterior branches
when finished.
If the stronger growth is on the left, you will want to bend to the right
On the right, you will want to bend to the left.
With this in mind, you will want to wire in the direction of what direction of which
way you want to bend... so for example if you want to bend to the right, you will want to
wire from the left side of the branch to the right.
The diagrams will show it with this being bent to the right.
Picture one will go here, once uploading prob, is sorted out
Side note... it would be easier to go through and wire fine branches as well, before
beginning bend, so you don't have to try and work in a tight confined area.
Now for the bend...
First thing I do is bend the branch back towards the rear of the tree so that it is at
a right angle (90 degrees) to the trunk.

Once this is done you will want to begin to bend,
about an inch from the trunk, in the direction you wish to go. So if to the right, to the right.
Pic 3 will go here
Then continue the bend around towards the front. Don't wake this bend to big.
You want it as tight as possible, but at the same time not to tight.
Pic 4 will go here
Continue the bend a little bit past the front. Then position the fine branches radiating out
away from the center of the trunk.
