Has anyone ever air layered coral bark 'sango kaku' acer palmatum? Was it successful? Are they good on their own roots? I would appreciate any advice/wisdom that someone with experience could offer. Thanks for the time and help. I just picked one up, its still relatively young, but I figure I could get at least three trees out of it if its possible.:o

They seem very hardy on their own roots. I bought a seedling a few years ago that I'm growing out which has been growing quite well that I'm going to put in the ground next spring. Don't know about airlayering them.

RichKid,

I have airlayered 2 smaller branches from a coral bark maple. Both have lived on their own roots for about 3 or 4 years now. They are not particularly fast growing, but then again, neither are their mother who is growing in the front yard. I used the wire tourniquet method.

Regards,
Martin

Thanks for the responses guys! I appreciate it. I think I'll just try to get it in order this season and make sure it's healthy. I just bought it today like 90% off lol. Homeowners arent buying in the winter! So when spring rolls around I'll get it out of its nursery container and into some good soil and see how it does. If its looking good, Ill try to air layer it the following season.

I'm going to do the same thing with a Shishigashira japanese maple that I picked up a couple of weeks ago. :D
