I purchased this Cork Bark Elm a few weeks ago, and I am happy to report its back on track after an insect/fungus assault! New growth is pushing, and no new damage in the past week.

The seller planted the tree from a seedling (not sure of it was from a bonsai nursery or commercial nursery) 26 years ago. In that time, she has lost the information on it, and doesn’t remember the exact variety. After reviewing Evergreen Gardenworks Elm section, I think it’s either a Corticosa or a Yatsabusa. The longest leaf I have seen if 1.5 inches at the tips of the branch, but they get dramatically finer lower down. Any help with a positive ID would be appreciated!

Dont worry guys, I just finished potting two trays of rooted cuttings! They are being ground grown for some time at a friends backyard bonsai nursery. I also have plans for air layering in the future. More progress to follow!

Well... if it is from a seedling it truly could be anything, because seedlings aren't genetically true to the parent cultivar. That said, it looks like a corticosa to me. Yatsubusa leaves are much more narrow (see photo):

No idea if the nursery made it from a cutting or from seed, but thanks for the help! That’s the way I was leaning too since the bark seperates In stretch marks like Corticosa on Brent’s website.

You could call it a BaB Elm :) Seriously this is how cultivars start... a strange seedling somewhere, or a witches broom or other genetic aberration, that people notice as having positive, unique traits. Start 100,000 cuttings, start selling them, and you could establish a new cultivar!
