I have a Cotinus coggygria – Purple Smoke Bush tree I purchased a Lowes for $5 during the end of year sale in 2009 I think. I stuck it in a gravel bunker and left it alone until a snow storm snapped the top of the tree. At one time the tree had deadwood going right the middle of the trunk, the deadwood has since been covered over with bark. The whole trunk and even the nabari now has mature bark on it. Last year I styled the tree and it was pretty sparse in the leaves department. The tree leafed out this spring and was attacked by a major thunderstorm with hail in it. The tree fought back with ramification branches everywhere. The leaves are pretty small right now compared to last years leaves. The apex needs more development. More photos on my website: Here

I read your article about this tree, what a journey it had, with the mother nature making it again the bonsai size. Do you have updates on the tree? Did it flower? Did you choose a pot for it?
