I have this air layer that was separated last summer. This year it just sending up shoots from the soil. Are these suckers growing up from the roots? I’ve searched and have not found whether you can propagate from root cuttings on Cotoneaster? Thank you!

Not sure if root cuttings from cotoneaster is possible either but root suckers are common which indicates it should be possible to grow from root cuttings.
Suckers can be a natural part of how a shrub grows or can be from roots damaged during transplant. They will usually develop their own roots and you can remove them as independent plants at some stage. Even with no roots I have found that suckers strike as cuttings much quicker and easier that stem cuttings.
If you don't need more cotoneasters and don't need a clump style tree just snip them off as deep down as you can. Cut at soil surface will guarantee lots more coming from the stem.

I was thinking the same thing, if they are budding from the roots then they should be able to propagate from that method. It was weird to not see anyone ever talking about it.
If you ask my therapist and wife, I have enough cuttings. I stand firm in my opposing belief. I have struggled to root cuttings from this plant, although this is a successful air layer.
I was a bit bummed when these lower branches died this spring, but I am happy to see it budding again down low. With that lower left branch gone I lost direction, so here it sits. I very well May replant next season just to see what is going on.
Always always, thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!

I stick the cuttings in the ground, under the bench and that works very good. They get very little sun, are surrounded by tall grass, and they get watered every time I water the trees above, which is every day and twice a day most of the summer. The ground there gets very hard after a while. It's very high humidity there and they grow great. I have cottoneaster "coral beauty". Maybe this helps you in the future.

Ive tried several ways including the method you suggested. I think they are mad I called them cottoneasters for so many years.
