Gonna have to get drastic this spring.

Just let it grow out and do some inner cleanup next season - pretty certain one year of decent new budding and growth and you will start to see a tree in there ;)

All I see is an ugly wagon wheel... ever have one of those you just don't like? They never die do they...
I'll do as you suggest but have to loose some spokes on the wheel this spring. Thanks

As it grows in a bit you can develop ramification and is why I suggested it. Actually pretty quickly if it grows very good for you... Pretty certain you will see a tree next fall and a properly shaped one over the next few.

Resurrecting a dead thread to say that what you call Ilex Glabra (Inkberry) doesn't look like that to me. Leaves are oblong or obovate instead of elliptic. To me it looks like Myrica Pennsylvania (Bayberry). However, it also resembles some of the Winter berries, which are in the Ilex family. The true test is whether or not it's actually evergreen. Neither of those I just listed are.
