It looks so easy, until I try. It's one reason I love bonsai. A chance to be an artist without having to draw!! Glad it comes natural for you! I would have been a good cave painter.
 
What kind of markers do you use?

I have been using tombow, they are not acidic and do not bleed so I can sketch my lecture notes in techni-color. And the tombow act almost like water color. With the colorless blender you can do some really wild stuff.
 
don't want to sound righteous here, but another good tip for understanding design is to get out there and study real trees
 
That's quite a leap to assume we in fact do not "study" real trees.
