1mm wire is too hard to work with at this early stage, so...

You have a start to what appears to be some really nice looking Zelkova, hopefully some day you'll have some that look like this one I saw online. Anyway what is this humic/kelp mix you mentioned for the soaking as I'll be getting some seeds soon also and would like to be as successful as you were. Also how long did it take for the seeds to sprout? TIA

i was soaking the seeds in RAW brand powdered humic acid and kelp at a ratio of 5/2 before i planted them in the spring. helps plants root among other things. they sprouted a month after i planted them.

i like the thin branched, dense ones. if i just keep after it for the next ten years i should have a couple nice shohin pre bonsai

i actually had some success taking cuttings from two zelkovas i got from Evergreen Gardenworks the other year (😄 bonsai time is different), but lost the cuttings to that late march freeze we had this year. one of the mothers, too. the other mother attracted some type of borer and their whole clan moved in. had little pillars of sawdust sticking out of and all up and down the trunk. i had planned on airlayering them and chopping the tops. i think i like the the structure from seed better.
