So this spring I trimmed a few apple trees up a bit so I could use them as bonsai. .

Any one think It will be ok to dig them up in the spring and what else can I do to get it ready if any thing

Here's the first one. It's about 5'

Well I just know if I should chop another big branch off in the spring or just leave it and trim the small branches. ...

I was mentioned?

Apples (and Crabapples) root reliably from airlayers.

The gnarly lower trunks are attractive too. Good find.

Thank you!

If you don't mind me asking what's the benefits of airlayering in stead of just cutting off what I don't want... beside having another rooted branch.

I have a bunch of these guys in my backyard so I don't need to start a new one.

With layering you can choose exactly the shape you want to start with and start with small trainable roots instead of old coarse roots. It's not that you can't just work with what is there, but once you get roots in a layer, you will see why and probably LOVE this method!

SO if I do an air layer take off what I want would the bottom part the the tree still back bud and I can work with that to?
Or something like that?

This is why I would layer.

These are at least what to have in a layer, you probably have better spots unseen. IMG_20151024_060215.jpg

The low one could be a little higher.

And you should only do one at a time.

But like stick says, you get the opportunity to chose for taper, movement, and that lil benefit of radial roots!

Look for trees! To layer.
Not just layer for the sake of propagation!

Mostly.

Primarily, when you are air-layering, the air-layer has to be the most important part. If it's not, it's simpler and safer to just prune off the branches. tl;dr: only airlayer stuff worth air-layering.
