Hi Folks,
I wanted to share some photos from our small clubs 5th annual Bonsai Show. We hold it on the Canada Day long Weekend and with all the other exhibits and events so close by, we get huge numbers of the public going through.
It’s a very informal show, aimed at the public and we encourage all members to show trees no matter how experienced they are.
These first ones are;
The entrance to the garden/show
Peter Wilson's Double Trunked Mountain Hemlock
Another angle of the show - in the background is Discovery passage and Quadra Island.
Two Shore-Pines -Pinus contorta
Another 3 shore pines.

let me send along my congratulations for a show that might not have happened because of the economy. There is no reason why a show cannot be put on in a less than expensive costly public facility.
Let's face it. We put shows on to deepen our skills at display and to attract new interest to our club and membership.
I think you have accomplished both opportunities to have a show and done it inexpensively.
Kudos. I hope your post encourages others to follow suit. Love the hemlock :)

Some more tables:
-A table of Shore Pine Bunjin's
A table of mixed items, the two largers ones at each corner = Alaskan Cedar, variuos accents and junipers.
Close up of the old Alaskan Cedar.
A table of two large Mountain hemlocks
Another shorepine Bunjin.

Many thanks Dick,
You are exactly right, we try to extend our hobby/art to the community at large, its not a contest, no prices etc. Our displays could be more formal but we want each member to participate so its not formal at all.
We hold it in the back garden of the Sybil Andrews cottage (a great Canadian Artist), the local Arts Council have members showing their art, the local garden club are also in the front garden..... just a few 100 yards away "Transformations on the Shore" a chain saw carving contest had 25 carvers showing their talents as well.....a great community event.
Cheers
Graham

Thanks for sharing.

I'll take informal gatherings any day. This is when the public can approach people and really ask questions. Information is freely shared and the public is the winner because all are more engaged rather than focusing on being pretentious.

Bravo

Thank you very much Judy, Mach and Al,
Our club promotes the use of native species and we are so lucky that we have a couple of members (4) who have worked with them for decades (Mountain Hemlock, shore pine, Sasatoon Berry, Vine maple, Abies lasiocarpa etc).
We had club members guide many visitors/public around the show explaining and answering questions as they went.......it was our first taste of summer so the crowds were large with 20-30 people in the show at any one time.
We also have 10 people that signed up to join the club :o
Cheers Graham

I love it and I hope more clubs do this and cater more to the public...and less on the commercial side.

Problem for some of us (here in the south) is that doing it outdoors will probably "cook" the attending public :p LOL
