Note the descending vertical branch I was about to cut off in this Shimpaku. It is a Chameleon caterpillar mimicking the pattern of the branches. No apparent damage to the foliage. There's always more to learn about with bonsai!

Inch worm - because the caterpillar seems to be measuring with its looping motion.

Family Geometridae - a family of moths, many species, 1400 species in North America. A number are serious pests of food crops (cabbage looper),

In all probability it was feeding on your tree. If you only see one, its not a problem, see several, hundreds you need to spray.

If I see hundreds I'll find a new hobby!
