If you've ever driven around Houston, specifically the middle and upper class suburbs, you'll see crepe myrtles. Like, lots of them. Literally everywhere. Every grocery center parking lot, every strip center median, lining the fences outside neighborhoods, in everyone's yard, EVERYWHERE. Once you start seeing them you can't stop.
What else I've seen upon closer inspection is that the vast majority are suffering of crepe myrtle aphid infestation and subsequent black sooty mold. I've been battling it on mine as well. Systemic works for my potted trees, but the in grounders are hopeless, even after defoliating.
My unscientific observation is that massive overplanting of a species has allowed the pest problem to explode exponentially.
Am I totally off base here? What are some other examples of overplanting leading to problems? Too much of a good thing I suppose.
