Leo From NE Illinois brought me this, on his way to Wisconsin.
@Leo in N E Illinois I'm calling Bullshit!

You are never IN NE Illinois!
How about a Blueberry, Cheese, and Mushroom recipe!
Thanks again for picking this up!

I looked back at a couple threads...
@GrimLore needs to post a picture.
@Brian Van Fleet needs to update.
@grouper52 had a couple.

There were quite a few branches like the one I left at the bottom. You can see some of the stubs.20160830_091107.jpg

All that interior growth was already there....that's what I'll end up using to build branches.20160830_091116.jpg

Reverse side is making cones I reckon.20160830_091137.jpg

Here's a weak shot of the base....got a pretty nasty root there...

Any repotting experience is welcome!

Thanks!

Nice species - I've been developing a crypto for a few years now - it looks a lot like mine foliage wise too. It's not producing cones - that is backbudding btw.

I lost the tag!

Looks like it "might" be a Pacific Blue Shore... Not certain which one you are referencing me to here as there has been quite a few over the years. :confused:

Oooo...there is another dimension!

Thanks!

I'd say about 2 ft tall..
The base is about 2inches across, maybe a bit bigger deeper.

I really hacked off a lot more last night.
And cut that root off, it seems to flare well under the soil.

I'll take a pic this afternoon.

Just found this thread.
and the answer is
Cryptomeria japonica 'Lobbi" - this form is slower growing with a more narrow habit than the type. Considered Columnar, and Dwarf or semi dwarf.

So far in reading up on Cryptomeria (new to me also) they warn that it prefers acidic soils, needs protection from wind in winter, hates to get dry, and foliage naturally turns copper-brown for the winter, will green up in spring. They warn it is only hardy in the warmer half of zone 6, so definite protection for our areas.

Also saw on Japanese site they recommend repotting in warm weather. May or June, considering Japan is mostly further south than Saint Louis, for us Chicagoans it might mean June or July. Put it on the list of "Repot after Father's Day" trees.

I might also add, with good after care, you can probably repot almost anytime. But at least one site recommended late, after weather has gotten warm.

Definitely, you're always a good source of info. Cryptomeria really looks like it's dying in the winter. Lost mine and cedar of libani during a cold spell this spring, nothing special as a tree, just for info. I should have shuffled them with my maples.
