From page 26, Bonsai Today 12.

It is a surface root effect that spreads out, not a bunch of upside down v's.

Surface root effect often seen on softwood trees/roots.

With age this also happens naturally, but Japanese like extreme order for the decorative.

aaaaaaaaa! So very much to get a handle on!

The six year black pine contest is going to have an extremely steep and tall learning curve for me on the front end. Never even considered pine, let alone bonsai from seed. OK, I have only been not considering if for a few years. I've only been intentional and deliberate about "bonsai done right" for a year or two. The rest was "playing at bonsai"; houseplants in a pot two sizes too small

Hopefully, there will be some space for me to read and catch up after sprouting (and then cutting - seems like that happens really early on). So much fun!
