Yep, that is a way to create a unique branch on a tree... Cleaning the wound before applying paste is better. The rough edges are dry and dead, so no callus will originate from there. It will start further back, but the dead tissue is in the way so it will slow down the process. The cut paste / glue is not bad, but is best for big cuts on roots. I have better experience with cutpaste / putty.

Okay, so if I am going to redo the treatment of the wound, I will take an xacto knife and cut just deep enough to go through the bark and trace the wound maybe a half centimeter out from where the current one is. Remove the material in between then seal the whole wound with cut paste glue or putty.

If I am going to do this, I am also going to create the hardware cloth fence around the trunk to prevent further damage.
