Just bought this dawn redwood. How do i get the trunk to flute or spread? Should I stick it in the ground? I want to keep it as an informal upright with branches downward sloping. Should I wire the primary branches now? I'm a newbie. Any advice is appreciated.

I can see it in your profile. I don't have experience with Dawn Redwoods so hopefully someone else will chime in.

Get it in a wide shallow pot and let the roots run.

Put this in a box 5-6 years ago. Did ok until it escaped thru the bottom into the ground....really took off....

If you are trying to grow some trunk thickness, don't worry about the branches. Most likely you'll be cutting them off and re-growing them in the proper scale.

13-14 feet tall, I'll be cutting the top 6-7 feet off soon.....good luck with your Redwood!
