I always figured redwoods were pretty resilient trees. Mine is pretty healthy, but just today I noticed these holes on the trunk. Anyone have any ideas? I googled a bit but only came up with scale insects, and spider mites mostly, but i dont think those burrow into wood.

Foliage is robust and pest free.

Is that live wood or dead wood with the holes?

How big are the holes? Looks like some type of bark beetle. There are a lot of them out there, some are very destructive, infecting the tree with a fungus.

Probably the width of a toothpick or a bit smaller. I will check out your link, thanks

I wouldnt defoliate, although it looks like the leaves may shed anyways. How wet is the soil? You might want to remove the fertilizer too.

I will admit I have never seen a Dawn redwood like that, or in a cascade pot like that. Interesting, hope it is okay.

Some type of borer, from the looks of it. If the tree survives, it'll most likely remain weak for years if not forever.

Do you think its too late for a systemic insecticide? The tree grew quite a bit this year and appears to be growing strong.

All I can tell you is I've encountered borers from time to time and it's a toss-up as to whether the tree will survive. You've got some big ones! Reminds me of the borers we sometimes get with hornbeams. Those trees either die outright or stay weak forever. Bald cypress is also sometimes attacked by a borer (similar size to yours) that tunnels beneath the bark but doesn't make a "shot-hole" like on your redwood. We detect those by a crimson sap oozing from discrete spots from under the bark. Once we peel the dead bark away we have interesting tunnels. These specimens often survive, though with dieback, and can actually make interesting bonsai with deadwood. The low holes on yours are concerning. Maybe give the systemic a try. Don't see where it can hurt.

i lost a chinese fringe this year....had bore holes. turned out there were numerous holes. found shiny black butts. followed some tunnels, they went deep and long. I didn't know why the tree was weak this spring, died rather quickly. 2 other fringe trees unaffected. don't know if i could have saved the tree had I noticed those perfect little holes sooner. good luck
