we have had a strange spring here with temps going up and down,

It's too early to de candle here. Wait till the end of the month. I have 2 black pines, one scots pine, one white pine, and 2 ponderosas. Only the 5 needle pine could be de candled as it was ahead of the rest in a sunny spot in my greenhouse a few weeks in spring. The rest need a good month before decandleing.

That sounds awful late for decandling. Does that leave enough time to develop the buds and ramification in our shorter season? I'd be curious as to what Brian would have to say on this.

Brian would say "100 days before your first frost." http://bonsainut.com/forums/showthread.php?11339-AWhen-do-you-decandle-your-JBP&highlight=frost+date 100 days before our first frost here in Brooklyn NY which is pretty close to jersey is August 3rd, our first frost date is Nov 11th.

Here's new jerseys looks like you all are a week or two before us, here's the jersey frost map so you can get a more definitive answer.

beng i decandle last year starting on the sixth.
cut my candle length in half in one season, i can probably wait a week possibly 2 but i also use the 10 day cut method allowing 10 days between strong and weak areas, pushing the strong areas 30 days away.
most of my buds are fully extended and beginning to open i was going to start with the weaker trees to allow to gain strength on the second set of buds. it worked well last year
thanks also for the cold frost map.
back to my question
anyone have experience with completely different bud extensions?
thanks

Makes sense, I was going to try the method Ryan Neil discussed in his youtube videos this year.

As for size and ext stage its probably due to vigor. Top candles on some of my pines are fully open but bottom candles are still barely extending.
