Anyone interested in starting a 5 year discount rack tree contest? All species allowed but must have been purchased off a discount or clearance rack.

Local big box store has a discount rack I peruse on a regular basis. No problem picking up a new one and seeing what we can do with it.
It's one of the places I get my fix as well. Hit one last night and got me a privet. I know nothing about the tree other than it appears to be hard to kill.

Discount garden center/landscape nursery vs discount bonsai nursery? Two very distinct resources there.
I know we're really talking the former (Otherwise where's the challenge?), but there may be some clarification needed in the rules.

I believe I've seen similar take place here before, though I never participated, so not an awful idea.

Good observation. I didn’t think about bonsai center discount racks. It will have to be box store discount rack material. Thank you for pointing that out @ShadyStump

I'll throw this guy into the mix. Got it at Home Depot last week. Seems some of the top got caught in something so it was taken out of circulation. When I told them I didn't care and only needed the bottom part of the tree they thought I lost my mind (which may be technically correct). It was chopped, bare rooted, root pruned and replanted within a hour of getting to my house. Planted in Bonsai Jack universal mix. I took 10 cuttings (a bonsai dozen???) in anticipation of the graft work to come. The nebari kind of makes the tree look like a boot right now and will need work. Looks like sap is beginning to flow.

Nice little maple! I did the same thing with one I found where the graft had failed. Gotta love that 70% off. This little guy is my candidate. I may do a crepe myrtle too

Since the search is part of the challenge, maybe limited to trees purchased after the start date?

I would be willing to try. I just picked up a crape myrtle for $6 on the discount shelf at lowes.
I posted i would give it a try but never a pic here is a pic of my myrtle. Was sickly when I got it but better soil and water has helped alot.20220411_110119.jpg
