Recently bought a good sized Divi Divi just out of curiosity. Figure the climate in Southeast Florida ought to be fairly kind to it. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with trunk chopping one? Right now the trunk diameter is about 1.25”…

I’ll post when the light is better tomorrow.

I live on the other coast of Florida, don't have a divi divi yet but from what I understand they are very similar to a BRT. I would think it would survive if you wanted to chop it now but I'd wait until mid February or so, it will recover much quicker. Have you considered trying to make a flat top out of it instead of chopping it?

I assume you keep it outside and only have it inside for the picture?

I agree with the above on the timing of the chop. Not only because mid Feb is more in line with the natural flow, but also because your plant is stressed and your only concern right now should be bringing the plant into a space of greater vitality.
Also, if you are gung ho on doing a chop, you will be able to air layer the top off if you wait until winter is over and plant follows its natural rhythm of spring growth.

I guess it’s about 18-20.

Oh, I’m not necessarily even “planning” to chop it in the future, but I agree about holding off on doing much of anything any time soon, penumbra. It’s only been living with me for about a week. Not much info available for them as bonsai on the internet as far as I can tell so we’ll see.

Yes, it is living out on my front porch right now. But all of my windows face south or west so if it gets cool, bring it in, right? If you’re in SW Florida and interested Wigert’s has some in stock. It’s where I got mine.

The lit I could find in the web indicated slow growth but at the shop they heartily disagreed.

I’m new, but here is my Divi Divi. I’m into anything compound leaf. LoL

Cool, never heard of a divi divi. I have a few Vachelia Caven trees that I've been growing from seed, also compound leaves.

Hawk Force, good to see you have some Divine protection for your trees.

Don’t know about all that. LoL Divi Divi is from the tropics. Also called a compass tree? Cause the prevailing winds blow it all in one direction. It’s a cool lil tree (mine) but in general too. I’m not sure why, but I really like the leaf pattern. Honestly it started with a jacaranda and kind of took control of me. I have couple junipers and bald cypress and wisterias, Vietnamese blue bell, bougainvillea, fukien tea, Chinese elm, ficus, and couple things that are probably weeds, but have the right leaf pattern and woody trunk. LoL ooh I got a mexican fire bush/butterfly bush stump! Someone was throwing it out and I dug it up and potted it up and we'll see what happens. It’s a big gnarly stump with a bit of character to it, should be cool. Thanks for replying
