I have an American one I just separated a week ago. Full of roots but time will tell if it makes it long term. I am surrounded by them but have never really been interested in trying them. I did dig a stump I was removing anyway once and it didn't make it. Much like Zach said, it was mostly tap root and only a few lateral ones. It did the classic push out some growth to give you confidence and shrivel away.
