I have personally been in a professional nursery where I was told to leave by 1PM. THey were doing there spraying that afternoon. Which meant, 3 guys in suits covering the full nursery in a blend of insecticide and fungicide. And these were not little cuttings they were spraying. There were a large number of 3rd generation caretaker trees there. They did that every 6-8 weeks.
So yes. They do this too, and worse.

Don
t mistake professional bonsai nurseries with green, sustainability focussed growers.

I've been told much the same about the treatments at bonsai nurseries. Have heard through the grapevine that by the end of the growing season at some nurseries, workers are instructed to wear tyvek suits to avoid being burned by the solutions they're spraying. By the end of the growing season, the doses needed to be effective have to be jacked up to get the bugs/stuff that has not succumbed to less intense doses ...

I have absolutely no way to corroborate that, but the source was pretty reliable.

@Mike Corazzi ,

as was explained to us years ago from both China and Japan.

Health is the more important value for a Bonsai/ Tree Penjing.

Preparing for an exhibition takes 3 to 5 years and if wiring especially
it can be very stressful for s tree.
Trees evolved with breaking branches and leaves being eaten.
But vines wrapping around a tree can kill it.

So what we were taught to do, was generalise the shape and only when
going for an exhibition push the Grow and Clip / guy wire to the extreme.

The masters of China especially, tend to appreciate the life spans of
healthy trees. So it is rare that you will find a shed of dead trees.

Push to the extreme and image as slides.
Then let the tree / shrub rest.
This is why we are looking into holograms, much as paintings are
hung in museums.
Good Day
Anthony

* there are two types of Masters -
[1] Is known quietly by other Masters
[2] Is known from winning an Exhibition

Because of our Chinese heritage, our cousins hooked us up with
number [1].
Anthony, your post is so full of bullshit, you ought to be ashamed.

Whatever you (or K) were told “years ago” is obsolete information. And you keep repeating it. Get with the times, man!

You want to do Penjing, fine, go for it. Clip and grow is a valid technique. But it limits what you can do.

You say all kind of bad things about wiring. Based on what? Heresay? YOU don’t know! YOU don’t wire! STOP talking about stuff you have NO experience in!

But bonsai is wiring. Wiring is bonsai.

Sifu, @Adair M ,

Humble apologies for having offended you.

We come from different worlds, cursing is frowned upon
and weakens a man's discussion.

You may not realise how rude you just came off.

Yes, I can wire, did all that back in the late 80's early 90's,
especially after the Bonsai Today Article.
Just find no reason to.

As usual thank you for responding.
Dunderhead student,
Anthony

And you do not realize how ignorant you sound when you advocate using all these obsolete techniques, and make reference to the decades-out-of-date books and magazines. Time marches on, techniques improve, styles change. The things we can do today would amaze and mystify the old Masters.

You pride yourself on an education in art. Yet, you refuse to learn from the contemporary great artists! Bonsai is NOT. Stagnant art where a single image is created. Bonsai is living art, more akin to “Performance Art”! The tree looks like it does today, and a year later it might look entirely different! Yet the bonsai artist can influence the change the tree makes over time.

THAT is the art of bonsai!

You say you can wire? PROVE IT! Wire a tree. Common, I challenge you.

I back my posts up with photos of my work. You should, too. Common, wire up a tree. Show me the wire. Show me how it strangles the branches. I don’t believe it does. You say it does, so PROVE IT!

Sifu,

Bonsai / Tree Penjing is Health and the Design.

You have been watching the speed at which things can grown down here
and it isn't the climate.
Do you need more proof ?

Sifu, trees down here grown from seed or seedling / cutting are treated
with respect as life forms go. More like children. Not things to bought
or sold.
If I believe wiring harms, would I deliberately harm chidren?

There is big difference in 39 years from seed etc.
And caring.
To buying a tree,
Hope this explains.
Respectfully,
Slow Student,
Anthony

Believe me, Anthony, my trees are treated with great respect.

Bonsai Trees, like children, need to be trained when young and growing. The wise children never outgrow their “training phase” and continue to learn throughout their lives.

And so it is with bonsai. Continual training throughout its life is what makes a great bonsai.

If you are not continually rewiring, pruning and Pinching one of two things has happened: One, your tree is dead or Two, you have lost interest in the tree and it is now in decline.
