Hey Fellow B Nuts,
Here's my Double Trunk Sierra Juniper-Juniperus Occidentalis-Australis I collected in 2010. I just showed it for the first time this weekend at the BIB show in Oakland. Currently in a Gyouzan handmade pot, which i'm borrowing from Boon. It turned out to be a very special weekend for me when I found out that it won a Members Choice award and was accepted to the US national show. My main job at the BIB show since I joined has been Photography assistant, which is why I got to sneak the screenshot below from our phenomenal photographers-David Campbell and Sam Ogranaja. Had a great time hanging out with the BIB crew including @Adair M , @Dav4, @Eric Schrader and @markyscott
A short personal critique-
Two trunks which are similar in size, is not necessarily desirable within the traditional, “rules” of Bonsai. Usually with two trunks you’ll see a parent and child relationship. I feel like this tree is more like two brothers, both with very different personalities but you can tell their related. My favorite part of the trunks are the spikey jin similar to the desirable Ibo Jin seen on Tosho in Japan -caused by a whorl of branches that grew and died long ago. I love seeing spikey jin on our native junipers as it’s hard to find and gives the jin sculpture a unique look.
I hope to make the tree fuller in the future. The overall branch length is slightly longer than I’d like, I will remove and replace certain branches going forward. I want the area above the viewers left hand side to fill in more. I plan to slightly increase the shari on the left trunk and change it’s line slightly toward the top. Over time the live veins will swell and look stronger like a person that starts lifting weightsJ I’m stoked to see the tree continue to develop.
Thanks for taking a look!
