Tom e-mailed me the below to post. I have personally taken classes from him, helped him on his nursery and watched demos by him. If you have questions the website is at the bottom. Or let me know if you can't get a hold of him.
My name is Tom Roberts and I am the owner operator of Driftwood Bonsai. I am situated on Highway 101- 5 miles north of Bandon Oregon on the Oregon Coast.
My background is in Culinary Arts but after a 40 year career as a chef I am in the process of transitioning to running Driftwood Bonsai full time. I started building Driftwood as soon as I started Bonsai. It was evident from the beginning that I was meant to do Bonsai.
I started growing vegetables many years ago and a friend who knew I was into horticulture turned me onto Bonsai and the rest is history. I started growing trees from seed and cuttings using the root bag technique and creating my own soil mix. I have several acres with field grown trees.
I also collect local varieties which include; Shore pines, Douglas fir,Western hemlock, and Sitka spruce.
I really try to put a lot of emphasis on creating a healthy root system. I use organic fertilizer, I root prune the trees, I use a top quality soil mix and our climate is ideal for creating healthy dense root systems.
I also have been studying with Ryan Neil at Bonsai Mirai for the past four years and Ryan has been a wealth of information on field growing and collecting from the wild.
I am looking forward to being able to do Bonsai full time and feel I have a very nice selection of field grown and collected material to serve the bonsai community.
