Tom e-mailed me the below to post. I have personally taken classes from him, helped him on his nursery and watched demos by him. If you have questions the website is at the bottom. Or let me know if you can't get a hold of him.

My name is Tom Roberts and I am the owner operator of Driftwood Bonsai. I am situated on Highway 101- 5 miles north of Bandon Oregon on the Oregon Coast.
My background is in Culinary Arts but after a 40 year career as a chef I am in the process of transitioning to running Driftwood Bonsai full time. I started building Driftwood as soon as I started Bonsai. It was evident from the beginning that I was meant to do Bonsai.

I started growing vegetables many years ago and a friend who knew I was into horticulture turned me onto Bonsai and the rest is history. I started growing trees from seed and cuttings using the root bag technique and creating my own soil mix. I have several acres with field grown trees.

I also collect local varieties which include; Shore pines, Douglas fir,Western hemlock, and Sitka spruce.

I really try to put a lot of emphasis on creating a healthy root system. I use organic fertilizer, I root prune the trees, I use a top quality soil mix and our climate is ideal for creating healthy dense root systems.

I also have been studying with Ryan Neil at Bonsai Mirai for the past four years and Ryan has been a wealth of information on field growing and collecting from the wild.
I am looking forward to being able to do Bonsai full time and feel I have a very nice selection of field grown and collected material to serve the bonsai community.

At our bonsai show this weekend Tom from Driftwood Bonsai brought a shore pine that he collected. It was about 15yrs old. He did a demo with the tree and a couple other club members helped him with it. He said this tree was one of the lower quality trees he has right now for collected shore pines. He collects 100 shore pines a year.

I spend a couple days at Driftwood Bonsai. We spend most of the time cleaning up trident maples that were grown in the ground and now in Anderson flats.

I got to style a couple of collected shore pines on Saturday.

I spent the weekend at driftwood bonsai. I helped him repot about 25 Japanese black pines. These have been field grown. Some of these were from Randy Knights field growing operation when he shut down.

These are about 12yrs old. We dig them, knock some of the soil off from the downward and upward roots. Put them in Anderson flats and let them grow. He has done about 300 so far this month. The last picture is all of them.

I've had your site saved on my favorites for almost a year or so now, can't wait to make another purchase! Solid quality for buying bonsai online.

This weekend was bald cypress repotting. There was some other trees too. These have all been field grown for 10-13 years. The last couple in totes or Anderson flats.
Of course these trees will be for sale ones they get growing in their new pots

Went down to help out this weekend. A few trees we worked on. If you are within driving distance it’s worth it especially since Telaparion is no more. Tom also is good about shipping trees.
