Due to covid19 I’ve been out of work for a couple weeks now and am able to enjoy the mornings and daydream about bonsai. So it was pretty nice out this morning in my area of wild and wonderful WV. My yard backs up to the woods and is very steep downhill. Because of the hill and due to an oddball tornado last year there are tons of fallen trees. So I decided to run out this morning and dig a few trees out.
I’d really like some help with deciding if any of these have potential and what you experienced trainers see in them if anything. I dug all of these out within an hour so I was pretty rough with them honestly. Roots don’t look that great but the trees had me interested. They may not even be able to be saved. But let me know what you think.

4 (beech?) trees and a mourning dove for your pleasure.7951857C-DFAD-460A-871A-EF049C710417.jpeg55956382-6ADE-4BDA-8412-D3A1F4B7D264.jpeg0C1EBB91-298C-41FC-BD77-4CAE61277E16.jpegF1F2D526-0E79-4971-9919-7B457D4597BD.jpeg743BC345-7E8E-4CD3-B175-50383F2AC4D0.jpeg447E5239-9E3E-4C95-8680-45F7DD6186D3.jpeg8136E679-55DD-41BF-83F7-FE9B366554E0.jpegB2D3B20C-7B59-4E37-A1A0-012C5CE7A1B7.jpegB96D132C-44CF-47E7-90C2-551D7BCC1607.jpeg

Im thinking you're going to need to firmly wire that bird into the pot to get it to stay.

That stump could end up as a fun carving project.

Depending how much time and effort you are willing to put in. Time being a number of years. All of the trees could turn out quite nice.

You collected these late, they already have leaves open. Your success rate may suffer due to collecting late. Ideally, you would have collected about 2 to 3 weeks later. But time will tell. Your success rate won't drop to zero, most of these should survive.

Get them settled in, and let them grow a year or two. Then think about styles.

Nice.

And anywhere you have beech, you have a dozen other good species for bonsai. Keep your eyes open to other possibilities.
