Picked this Irma survivor up two weeks ago. The pot it was in broke and the home owner no longer wanted it. Trimmed it back (a lot) and let it sit. I was going to do the more major trunk chop next spring. But after reading about how hardy these are and how many new buds appeared (in a matter of days), I decided to do it today. The buds mainly broke up higher on the trunk. I really didn't want any wasted energy where I knew I was going to cut off later. This was the deciding factor.
I also cleaned up the roots and took the concave cutters to some cut areas. I'm very pleased at how good it turned out.
I've read they don't callous over very quickly and the wood is fairly soft. Tree will need some carving on the back side and preserved. But I'm really looking forward to this tree's future.
