I was given a dwarf Alberta spruce so I thought I would play with it a bit.

I pruned it and then let it rest a couple weeks.

This is what I have as of now. It is not perfect by any means but I think it turned out ok. I am new to the world of bonsai so I had no idea what to do with spruce. I am working of of pictures and YouTube :)

Welcome to Crazy!

That trunk has lovely taper....
But.....
You gotta feel for it in there and not remove so much closer growth to get to it!

No worries, soon they'll be $5 each after xmas and you can maul a bunch!

Some a what we been up to.

To find the best branches to keep....
I like to find the thinnest top one.
And the thickest low one.
Favor those as keepers unless one has a fork, or better close branching, better angle off the trunk, etc.

When you identify your thickest keeper low branch, and thinnest keeper high branch, you can almost mindlessly cut off thinner low stuff, and thicker high stuff. Usually the ones growing up from the main trunk.

That should allow you a view in.

Then simultaneously working from the top down and bottom up.....
Mostly looking, assigning values, even twist tie labeling the best branch to keep at each whorl....
Identify you're best branching.

You gotta paw in there to find em and when you do, as soon as you spin it you won't see it anymore, so a drawing helps, I envision a wiring diagram. Jot down rough thicknesses...or just draw lines as thick as the branches.

The most important is to have branches that diminish in size going up....
But if you have a whole tree full of perfect closely forked branches to chose from, and one is a bit out of proportion, keep it, it's easier to put on girth than get good forking.

Keep it 3d!

Heres an interesting one that went from three trunks, to two, to five!
Just keep tweaking it!

I got a bird's nest for $5 last year. Doing well so far. I think it's good practice whether people like them or not.
I feel sorry for the tree...gonna get cold in winter!
Good news is they backbud easy for me...But i dunno if that's enough on it to live. I like the forest planting of spruces.
