Okay friends. This dwarf gardenia was in a particularly perilous spot of my front garden and over the years has slowly been dying off and getting smaller (you can see some dead growth at the base that I cut off) after some light reading on gardenias, I figured it’s chances of survival might be better off collected and potted. If she dies, well it’s just a 7 dollar plant I bought 3 years ago. But I really hope I can save it! Something about it is interesting.

okay into the question. A LOT of the root mass was dead, and the roots were sodried out I’m not even sure what was alive or not, so I triedto keep as much as possible. I potted it up with some jacks bonsai soil and there isn’t muchroom for the roots to spread in this pot. What do you all think, should I leave her in the bonsai soil/pot or move to a bigger pot with regular soil? Also open to other after collection care suggestions! (Pictures taken inside bc it was dark by the time I was finished, but I’ll be trying to keep it outdoors as much as possible, weather permitting)

Cool gardenia!

I have witnessed some pretty neat “trees” developed from these mamma-jammas...

I have never worked with them personally.... but I DO know that every time you repot/disturb/alter the root system, it hits “reset”.. the plant has to “bottom out”, stagger, and “bounce back” (if that makes any sense ;) )... and the whole stagger, and bounce back thing is MUCH more difficult if the tree is struggling “back” ANYWAYS.

If it where mine.. i would leave it... focus on it’s health... I feel that IF it chooses to die.. it will GLADLY die in EITHER pot or soil combo.. and if you repot again.. you lower those odds.

🤓
