My cryptomeria- yoshino took a sudden dive within a week. All the foliage turned brown except the tips at the apex which are sporting new green growth. Strangely it’s not crispy and dried, just brown

I removed from the pot to check the roots and they seemed fine, sprayed with some captain jacks fungal spray. Any ideas what this could have been? At this point I’m thinking it’s a goner but I’ll do my best till it’s absolutely dead.

Did your crypto make a comeback? I have one that seems to be slowly dying, not sure if you saw a similar progression. Foliage seems to deteriorate in irregular places - not always tip first, not always stem first, sometimes right in the middle of a shoot...I know I've had chipmunks burrowing in the top of the nursery pot I'm sure that doesn't help. Also experienced a failed air layer on it this summer....

Both of my yoshinos had the same issue, the one in the photo did not make it unfortunately. I cut off all the brown bits and it started to backbud for a while but eventually it died. I still think it was a fungal issue.

I took the other which was less affected and planted it in my sisters yard and it made a recovery. Although the brown parts stayed brown.

Side note- mine went brown almost immediately, there was little to no yellowing at all really.
Have you treated with fungicide?

Maybe it could be over watered?Although I’ve always treated my cryptomerias much like my hinokis in terms of watering as they grow in the same environment in Japan.
