In Florida grows the Juniperus virginiana var. silicicola subespecies, seems to have better foliage than average ERC https://www.carolinanature.com/trees/jusi.html

Little rust spots are all over tree. Ugh. F**k me.. I don’t want it to affect my crab apples or other junipers. I guess it’s to the burn pile this weekend 😔

You’ll never rid that ERC of it so I would definitely get it out of the garden before it spreads.

Also, if your neighbor(s) has that big erc, or it’s found in that tree patch over adjacent to the neighborhood….good luck.

How do I kill this rust on my fruit trees or almost anything woody in the rose family..? You don’t 😅

Ok ok I know this had rust , but treated it with a systemic and sprayed the foliage w copper , and no evidence of apple cedar rust, I removed some branches and repositioned. It looks too good IMO to discard. Not yet , it’s segregated in the front of the house and not w the rest of ze trees BFA2F77B-D7A6-48BE-BDBB-298D4EA0AB59.jpeg

What is the direction you want the tree to go? Looks like it could be a nice formal/informal upright.

Are you going to graft the shimpaku on the primary branches close to the trunk, or on the trunk itself?

I want to graft foliage mid way directly to the trunk , and then use the top as deadwood spire .. with sort of this design in mind

Did it overcome the rust? I feel like suggesting burning is a pretty extreme response if it can be wiped out...

Yeah it faded away after some treatments w copper .. but it will be back . So I will be grafting itoigawa foliage. Just how it is , some native juniper foliage is very tight , this foliage is scale super uncommon for ERC! But is too leggy and gets rust. Hopefully in 5 years it becomes something good
