So I cheated, I didn’t make this, I bought it. Also, it came from zone 6 or 7, so it might even wake up in my brutal winter (it seriously is brutal, too hot to go without AC but not hot enough to justify turning it on).
Anyways, I think I wanna raise it 2 or 3mm to expose some roots. It’s already towering at a staggering 77-ish mm so raising it will still keep it below the 100mm/4inch mark.
And what do you guys think? I feel like I wanna grow that 1st branch out a bit, it’s got a lot of top growth to compete with, so we’ll see what the tree wants to do

Not cheating at all. Nice little elm!

I have a similar elm that developed some decent branching this year until the resident rabbit thought the fine(ish) branches looked like a nice midnight snack.

Nice little guy!
I would allow that first branch to grow out for now, you can always remove it later.....but putting it back on can be difficult.

I like hexagonal pots too! 👍

@sorce yeah, I’m probably gonna be a younger Morten Albek with all Shohin and smaller

@just.wing.it think I’ll be strict on the top growth and let that 1st branch run free a bit
It’s my 1st hex pot and I might get into it, I like it already. What’s the deal with them though? Can’t decide between oval/round and square/rectangle so hex is where they all meet in the middle?

Never thought about the Hexagon pots like that before, that's funny!
The best of all worlds!

The correct time to deal with this...??

also, I’m not entirely happy with the base of the tree. I want to comb the roots out and plant the tree on something flat, maybe a bottle cap will do. They can deal with heavy root pruning right? And is now the perfect time?
My temperatures are mid 20’s every day
