It is interesting from both sides. I like the idea of a round so you can work it both ways. I like the compactness and power of the new front, but the other image is pretty stunning as well. This is a special tree, I don't think you can go wrong either way. For the "old" front, I would work on growing some of the branching back toward the viewer, as most of it seems to be reaching away. So nice, easy to stare at this one for a while.

Hi Judy, yep agree on all counts, be interesting to see how it back buds too.

Thanks everyone for the comments

Nice tree.
I think i would keep the original front where as the trunk goes to the right.
The back is also nice.
The topbranch on the outer right i would like to see come more to the front and go over the shari in a bit just to hide a little of that.
Well, i think anyway thats what i would do.

Good idea. Good eye @Djtommy You looked really close. As that branch grows I'm sure there will be a good opportunity to bend that extended branch and explore how it looks with a bit of that carved area concealed.

Time for an update on this one, its another of mine thats been restructured, a few hard cut backs and some stripping of thick bits of wood in the knuckle where all the branches met, i started to feel these areas needed to be reduced, or eventually i'd have an ugly, swelling knuckle,

these areas became bothersome

this is how the tree looked apr 2018, right after removing a couple very thick branches, most noticeable removal was the thick branch running on the under belly, the resulting dead wood was done by hand, simply by ripping out slithers of wood

the blue branch, the yellow apical branch and the right side will form the basis of the new canopy, a main trunk that splits into three

the leader and left branch left to extend while the right side was pruned back, that side only needs ramifying
English after trimming back stronger right primary for ramification and leaving left n middle apex to extend n thicken by Bobby Lane, on Flickr

end of may more branch selection
Further branch selection..taking shape by Bobby Lane, on Flickr

today i cut back the left branch and apical branch for movement and taper....i felt they were now ready, look how thick theyve grown in a space of under 4 months

look again

this is what happens on deciduous trees when you pick your keepers and position them in full sun, prune adventitious shoots etc etc.....rather than just 'letting everything grow'
20180703_170047 by Bobby Lane, on Flickr

these three primary branches will set the tone for a new canopy and a tree with better, dynamic movement and taper

I found this thread again whilst looking up English elm online, looking for wintering temps, shade or full sun etc...

Rereading this, it looks like this is pontetially the first time Sorce introduced me to you? Funny :). This tree is very cool.
Someone posted saying it has a “sleepy hollow” feel... lol nope that was your other one which I now have ;).
I look forward to continuing to see this tree mate, it looks great. Gnarly little trunk and character.

next season, will be left to grow out, usual cleaning up at points, but will get a proper styling job at the end of next season, i really didnt want to thin it out too much, need more girth in some branches. you can see the right sided primary that ive already thinned too much imo

I like this tree a lot.. I think it’s great. So much character, movement, taper.. seriously it may not confirm with Japanese rules or anything, or it may, I’m not expert but I don’t care, it’s awesome looking.

What a fantastic dilemma with this trunk, to have multiple very good options to present as a front. Heck of a trunk and really interesting to see your work and progression.

Nice great trunk. Possible to reconsider trunk parallel to ground? Would be natural tree to be hanging over or off side of cliff;).

this one is up and running. no plans to change the angles. this one still has lots of growing to do. when i do re pot i will look to see if i can get any roots to grip the stone. or i may just glue the rock into the wedge of the trunk where it currently resides. i recently bought a tube of gorilla epoxy glue. dries clear

no mate, elms often emerge in spring like this, it varies through the species, this field elm has the red tinges but less intense
