They can make outstanding bonsai but they aren't that popular anymore so people don't know much about them. They were very popular many years ago in landscaping but have been replaced by something else (who knows what it is). I have been looking for one with a decent trunk for about three years now. I have talked with a few Mom and Pop Nursery owners and always get the same reply. They have heard of it but it's not a common plant they see anymore. My search continues...

Died unexpectedly two-three years ago. Purchased after it suffered some freeze damage, it did ok for a couple years but gave up the ghost without warning!:(:(:D:D:D:D

@LanceMac10 Well that sucks... If whoever is interested does an image search on Google for "Escallonia Bonsai" they will find some very nice examples. Tony Tickle has a really nice one but there are others that are even more impressive. This damn thread is making me really want one again. :(

I just re-potted a Red elf Escllonia for bonsai.. it has a nice three branch trunk and is about 15 inches tall ans wide.
It is going to make a great bonsai. I have had it growing for about 5 years now along with another type not sure if its
name. Project will be great learning experience.
Thanks for reading send any comments.
