Escallonia yardadori . A neighbor wanted this dug out of his yard but wouldn't wait for spring ,so I had to dig it in late fall . I did everything at once including putting it into a bonsai pot . It lived obviously but all the neat branching died way back . So I carved out grooves and started training branches into them and upwards . I think this has been growing about 2 years now . Escallonia is vastly under appreciated as bonsai stock. Great material.

I couldn't agree more. They are easy to maintain, and there are a lot of really old hedges of this stuff out there, and the trunks can look really gnarly.
