I purchased this little 4” size “too little” on Etsy last week. It arrived today and it was packed incredibly well for an inexpensive tree. I had put special note when I ordered it requesting a short fat tree with as thick of trunk as possible and low branches if possible. Needless to say the seller did indeed find all those qualities in this little tree. With a price tag just under $20 and free shipping I’m thrilled with this tree. This is today upon arrival.

After staring at it for a little while I figured it looked healthy enough to go ahead and get it out of its nursery soil and into something better. I put it in a 50/25/25 mix of pumice, pearlite and it’s original soil. (Peat based). I decided to put it in a hand made cup/bowl thing I had found at goodwill while back. It got the standard diamond hole saw treatment with mesh and drainage layer. I managed to get the majority of the old soil off but I did not totally bare root it. It had a pretty decent root ball on it so I didn’t have to trim anything. I’ll completely bare root it next repot. Now that it’s done being traumatized hopefully this one takes off. I’m going to give it a few days to recover under my t5 lights and then start to slowly acclimate it to outside.

Nice little tree and pot you got there. Might be a bit too early to ask but what direction/style do you plan to take this tree in?

I figured as much and was just curious that all. Sometimes folks have a preset plan or a certain style they would like to pursue with certain material.

I would like to keep it fairly short and squatty. Shohin to komono sized. That’s all I know at the moment.

My "Too Little" was a little too tall to fit under the lights when I brought it in last fall. I had to cut off a couple of woody chunks for it to fit. I just stuck them in a pot with soil, no rooting hormone or anything and they are pretty nice little cuttings now. So you can have more pretty easily.

That’s one of the things I love about ficus trees. I’ve gotten to where I have some rooting pretty much all the time. I swear everyone I know will eventually have a ficus from me. I end up with some pretty nice little starter trees. Here’s one of the variegated ones that lives on the window sill in my kitchen.

I don't love ficus, but I do like my "Too little" and "wiandii".

Looks to be growing strong! Are you keeping that inside or just did you just bring it in for the picture? My ficus that barely survived winter in my basement doesn’t seem to have grown at all this summer outside but is recovering some strength it lost from its near death experience.

It lives outside during the summer.

I wasn’t I love with the soil mix I had it in or the pot size. It was staying too wet for my liking and it showed in the roots. So…. While it is growing so good I got a quick repot in and adjusted the planting angle a bit. I noticed it is starting to back bud and I can see little aerial roots starting to form. Yay!
