So, here's a rookie's progression thread:
Earlier this year I got a Pitangueira / Surinam Cherry bonsai, and promptly chopped it to near-death in a pruning mishap (I meant to chop above a branch, but didn't account for the concave cutter going deeper -- rookie mistake). I put it to the side and watered it intermittently, having given it up as dead. About a month later it sprouted new growth. Here's a photo from 5/3/20:
Around that time I repotted it (after losing a number of plants to root rot in my very humid environment), and began to direct the new growth. Here's it on 6/16/20:
I tried my best to encourage ramification through clip and grow. Here's a photo from 9/9/20:
And one from today (9/30/20):
The cut is healing over nicely (cut paste was used):
And I think getting taper won't be too hard:
I'll do my best to keep this thread updated. I'm enjoying this plant a lot, and like the current look a lot better than the exaggerated S bend it came with. Right now it looks like it's going for an informal upright, but who knows what this will look like in another year or two?
For what it's worth, the potting media is 40% pumice, 40% monto clay, and 20% pine bark. I am currently using the "Green Balance" slow release fertilizer from Stone Lantern, in one of their air-pruning tie pots. I really like those pots. The anchor points are much more useful than I thought they would be.
