Last fall I purchased a European Beech from a reputable dealer on the FB auction site. Unfortunately, when I went to repot in the spring, I found the truck split into two below the soil line.

I decided to try and airlayer above the split.

When experienced bonsai people suggest you dig around and find the nebari before making a purchase, this is why!

I took some spagnum moss, got it wet. Made my cuts, applied some rooting hormone and used a colander to create a dome.

Finished product. Now I say my prayers to the bonsai gods. ✌🏻

Good luck, friend!

I’ve had no success in propagation of AMERICAN Beech by cuttings/layer.

I hope it’s European Counterpart behaves more appropriately for you.

Help me out with why you thought you had to do that. What was wrong with a double trunk?

I, too, disagree. Nothing wrong with it and a reasonable start on nebari. Nothing that can be done with the new, ~single~ truck could not have been done with the so-called split trunk. OP has just used-up 1 or 2 or 3 years for little, if any gain.

Respectfully disagree.

You did the tree right PeaceLoveBonsai. The proposed option would yield a horribly lopsided base. What's the point in doing that; going from ugly to less ugly??
