pine seedling cuttings.

Done the three trays of cuttings.only about 33% or less success rate. And by that I mean full circumference roots,as many had rooted only slightly and I just toss them.
I believe the low success was the fact that the lower 2/3 of seedlings were shaded from having 1400 of them sprout together in two 10” pots. When any leaves are shaded they do not photosynthesis near as much to produce the natural rooting hormones that I try to exploit from stalling the growth and letting build the energy.

Next batch is sprouting and they are more equally spaced in the tray to have full advantage of the light and co2 and Kelp/fulvic foliar.
Also will grow the seedlings in a motherplant type light intensity between 200-400 ppfd so the plants stall excessive growth and are not forced to grow from the intense light.Instead get making the very beneficial elements built up in the leaves and rest of the plant before cutting is made.
I used to put them upwards of 900.They handle it just fine but it’s good to get them into dimmer light.
Also they may have been a bit too mature for cutting. All my experimenting proves the best rooting is when stems turn a deep red like Jonas from bonsaitonight sais’.

even spacing for more light.

It came to my attention that the seedling cuttings are getting wider than I had anticipated,so placing them further apart to take advantage of the light.
Things are definately getting busy here at CM Bonsai!

The bigger Pines are only 3 or so months old.
I am up to 120 and still growing!

What’s going on with this beast!?

The only seedling I have. Was not made a cutting, but is same age as cuttings.
The reason I did not cut it was because it actually had interesting roots and was the only seedling that actually had the elusive ‘thick straight needles’ that I have seen recommended in various publications. Also had a thicker stem,so I thought maybe had better genetics.Seeds are cool!
It grew very fast.

zelkova’s are growing.

I am going to observe these first couple I did to see what progresses.I would like to see all the buds pop at the nodes instead of stretching.Which actually seems to be the case so far.I am happy with the lateral growth.
I was thinking about shaping a little soon, but I will experiment with this first one and give it some time.
The inner buds are definately active...so I will let them bush a bit if possible and maybe put some girth on first.
I also may see about cutting back and shaping a bit for small Bonsai tree...maybe even defoliating at same time since so vigorous.

zelkova shapes

Some are getting bushy and others have branches getting thick,so time to wire some.
Lots of big leaves, but I want to keep them at least for a little bit.

not much.Just had to spread branches around in a good direction, straighten trunk on one,and set primaries.

Interior buds look great,so may as well take advantage.

definately had to thin out Zelkova’s

I almost forgot how to make these:oops:
Went back to the ones from last night to thin and equal out the foliage.Did another also.
Let in light to retain the small primary’s I’m making.
I want to let these run a bit and bulk them up.

welcome to indoor growing.

not a major problem because I seen it in time.Only been a couple months!
Actually got in wall condensation.Makes me wonder if the builder skimped out on a piece of insulation or something. The outdoor /indoor wall.Actually have icecicles hanging out window weeps.Maybe they got clogged.
I’m going to drill into wall tonight and see.
At any rate I am transfering everything into a 4x8 grow tent on wooden pallets to contain the heat from reaching my walls and floor. That way I can give this room much needed ventilation and temerature stabilization.Keep it all in the tent!
New guy stuff here🤣

Ouch! Good luck with that!
Does not look to bad I put a little hole and just seems to be bottom half inch of insulation ,not above. So must of ran down sides of window in wall from intense condensation.Floor is lenoleum.
I stupidly taped a black plastic over indoors window and condensation was ALOT 86f on one side of plastic and probably high 30’s on other side of plastic.
3feet icecicles outside from window weeps!
Kinda stoked for the new tent.8x4’x6.5’ high.
May only need too lights with all the reflection inside the tent. Will just have to tweak temperature and everything.
Should have it by first week of new year.

another Zelkova.
Forgot about this one for awhile. It was getting the last bits in watering jugs of whatever I was dumping on other trees.Big rootball.Big seedling air layer too.

Chinese elms are sprouting.

This ought to be fun. They will probably thrive in this heat and intense light.I am so stoked to make seedling air layers.

Planted the European Hornbeam and Field Maples too a few days ago.

Before I get cooking for tomorrow was looking in the grow room. The zelkovas are almost all wired except for a few.Funny I see wires just starting to bite in at 1 week! That tell’s me something.
They are just sitting in good light gathering energy.I balanced this initial flush and am keeping an eye on Nitrogen.I’d rather they grow slowly at first to get strong and utilize all the energy of photosynthesis by getting a high Brix content and making chemical reactions that the roots and the tree as a whole need.Hopefully branch thicknesses will even out as desired from the thinning.
If I need to I can up the strength.I have been converting my nutrient percentages to PPM in the water and am getting a better grasp of my own costume ratios including specific additives that I deemed beneficial from the first go around.
I will buy a mg scale in a few days so I do not have to eyeball the powdered portions of some parts.
Happy Christmas Eve and Merry Christmas.

yay! Glad these are germinating. Was recommended
90-180 days cold strat after 30 days warm.I planted after 90 days.Looks good to go.I do not need that many.
I am excited to see how these do as seedling air-layers!
