I found this guy on the side of the gravel leaving my friends farm today. It was such of a pretty specimen of an American beech and the buds had just started to extend. The timing couldent have been any more perfect. It was just begging to come home with me. So I obliged it! I got lucky with this one and the roots were all in the first 6 inches of soil with plenty of fine feeders and no tap root to cut.. it seems Mother Nature must have planned this because she did an exquisite job preparing this one for its life as a bonsai. The natural ramification was impressive too for such a small tree. It also had a little friend growing a foot beside it and I didn’t have the heart to leave behind so it came too. I made sure they would stay together in the same orientation, just a little closer this time. I think they complement each other quite nicely. After an easy potting and 2 rounds of mixing soil they are in the shade in the back of my nursery area. I really hope both these little guys make it and have a speedy recovery this year. I’m debating what to do with these when it comes to future styling plans but I’m leaning towards just leaving them be as they are and seeing where they want to go on their own.

And as an added bonus there was a ton of little American hornbeam babies around so even though it’s a little late for digging them they all popped out of the ground easily, with no broken roots too! So I grabbed a few interesting ones, I think they will pull through the late replant and turn into a little forest next year. There was one in particular that just screamed mame to me so I made his dreams come true too! all in all i’d call that a pretty good day at work😁

The more I look at this tree the more I’m thinking of leaving the structure alone and just pinching buds next year. What do y’all think? I know it has a straight trunk but one day it may be something.

Just focus on keeping it healthy for a few seasons. I’d rather see it pruned back before it’s pinched in a couple seasons. A Beech is a long game. Not like a Maple where you can pinch reliably. Leaf reduction happens over time, then pinching once a few seasons is under the belt to experiment.
