b1.jpg b2.jpg b3.jpg I got this little bougie a few months ago at a farmer's market for $5. I planned on entering it into the mame contest, but decided to just let it grow. At first, I thought there was something wrong with the leaf color, but now I think maybe it is just growing up to be variegated. Any thoughts?

No difference in care if it happens to be a variegated-type.

Looks healthier than when first purchased. That's good!!!:D:D:D:D

Try some bloom booster from miracle-grow. But it's nothing that's a problem.

Awesome growth!

I just went through some old pics and got a shock at how much growth has happened!

This is a good one!

And we're still going!

You're collection of these little $5 beauties seems to be doing well.

Today...
I was looking at some stuff and kicking myself for not doing correct work, or thinking about a project enough to make it the best it could be.

You seem to be rounding this rather typical corner which is....
Finding your niche.
Building a collection and understanding what works for you.
And you are doing it well.

During this period, it is very easy to do what I have done.
Overlook important work.

I think a lot of times, newbs are afraid to share their "sticks in pots "...

Which is why I was so happy to hear
I think it's important for us to share developing trees here as well as what we would consider trees that are closer to peak. I am glad you shared this with us

Because I read this article recently.....
http://walterpallbonsaiarticles.blogspot.com/

On the American Bonsai Movement....

And it's all coming together here:p:cool:.

This tree deserves more than...
Oh, maybe variegated...oh looks pretty....
Oh nice growth...bloom booster.....furrrnt!

What are you going to do to make it a bonsai?

Lol!
I just realized that the younger the tree is...
The more there is to talk about!

But it's always... "ugh! That won't be a bonsai for 10 years"...
Skip...

But that only means we have 10 years of growth and developement to talk about!

We have a lot of power here to change this Bogus phenomenon.....we should take advantage of it!

Speaking of taking advantage!
Carol..you seem to be in an area that has many little gems to be found!

I don't know what you figure your bonsai path is.....

But it seems if you got to digging in them (places you've found all these cool deals) ....
Putting some initial work into them....
(Not to take away from @milehigh_7 ;)o_Othat greedy bastard!)
You could be selling starts yourself!

Anyway!

@carp says to cut them back to thicken them up.
More branches more thick.

That's all I know about bougie.

What's your plan for this Lil she feller?

Thank you very much for taking the time to post such a thoughtful comment! I do think many of us are afraid to show the little projects we have going, for fear we will be told that it sucks, or might be something in 10 years. And that's OK, because sometimes it does suck. In the last couple of years by trial and error, I think I have at least learned what I can keep alive, and what I can't. I know right now it's just a plant in a pot, but it's healthy, so that's the first step. But I've also learned it's OK to want something nicer to begin with, so I'm sure I'll be adding at least one more nice trunk from @milehigh_7 this season. I appreciate your comments, and the time you take to encourage and instruct, or at least suggest options. That takes considerably more thought and time than just hitting the "like" button.

Pic one of the hundred reasons you are one of my favorite people!

Realize the pleasure is mine!

So long as you get greedy at some point and charge me double for something one day!
That was you who found the chojubai too right.?

If so...that's your little goldmine! ;)

I been scouring every farm store I can find at travel baseball since!
Thought about exchanging the coveralls my mom bought me for Xmas from one of em for a tree!

I owe ya!

So what's next for this one?

HHmmmmm, I don't have a chojubai.... I did have a little Toyo Nishiki cutting. But I think it succumbed to a fungal issue, before I realized what was wrong. Like I said, I'm learning what I can and can't keep alive..... Not sure if I want to do anything much with this one now. I want it to be strong when it comes time to bring them inside.

Toyo are easy if you treat them like a shrub - Mine has zero internodes and grows insane. They all do if you just take a few simple steps up North.

But I think it succumbed to a fungal issue, before I realized what was wrong.

If it had brown leaf tipping and defoliated it got to much sun and foliar watering. Not fungal but if water collects and sits between the stem of the leaf and the trunk they toss foliage here. That applies to all Quince here too...
That coupled with more then a couple hours of Eastern sun will really wreck them when potted.

brown leaf tipping and defoliated
That's exactly what happened. :(. AND I had it on the south side of the house, thinking it would enjoy more sun. You're so right, I wrecked it!

The one we have often has very dark and very light green leaf at the same time. It is an odd color variety and may have something to do with it but we pay in no attention.

All part of the game, I wrecked 2 Creosote Bush from Clyde. I left them in full sun being a desert plant but after a few nights of rain they shut down being to wet. I took them inside and put them with some cacti - pretty certain they will come back although it could take six months as would in nature. It is how we learn :p

Very nice little bougie...I found if you let them grow out...they grow what I consider canes like my pyracantha does. I've always let it grow awhile...pick up vigor...and offer a few branches coming off the main branch before cutting back. But...that's me. It's how I developed my cascade bougainvillea.

I missed this statement...shoot...it's a bougie. Embrace those bracts...which are priceless no matter what age the tree is. I used to worry what ones said...now, I have found good direction given by ones willing to share...and a better direction for the tree I shared. That I don't let what ones say...steal my joy. Chew over what is said...grasp it's usually offered in well meaning. But final direction is all you. It may or may it be the direction you see...its up to you to decide. At the end of the day...if they bring you joy. That is all that matters.
