Fertilize my air layer?

Howdy folks....

I have an Elm air layer ongoing...
I did a minor check recently and saw roots! Yippee!

Have you ever fertilized your air layers?
Could this be potentially harmful?

So far I haven't fertilized it at all until today, I was giving my trees their dose of Fish, and I had tiny bit left in the watering can...so I topped off the can, severely diluting the fish fert, and watered the air layer.

The other question I have is this....
Do you ever trim the branches on your air layers?...my shoots are quite long....
My gut tells me to not touch it, but just curious if you have any other experiences....

And for trimming the branches, I do, but only after I have enough roots growing on it. I have cut it back and let the parent push out the new growth I want before cutting the layer off. I have been rubbing off dozens of buds while waiting for the leaves to open. Very vigorous start for when I put it in its own pot.
