I have no bonsai but I have 6 pre-bonsai trees in the ground to thicken the trunks. This is the second season they have been in the ground and all are growing like weeds. Question is, would fertilizer help that much or are the trees getting all they need from the ground?

Woops. Just seen a soil and fertilizer section. I guess I have never scrolled down that far. Please move if needed.

No worries.

There is a good recent thread on this.

I don't even fertilize stuff in nursery soil.

There is? I have been reading in the soil and fertilizer section for a few hours now.

9?
All soils are not equal. If your trees are growing well in the soil then it is probably OK. Once or twice a year fert may add a little growth and won't cause any problems.
Some soils are really poor for one reason or another. Some definitely benefit from extra fert but understanding the soil helps target what will make the best difference.
