Ficus Carica Trunk Thickening

Hey!
I bought a ficus carica (around a foot and a half tall) from the garden center.
I want to turn it into a bonsai! :D
My understanding is that I should keep it in a nursery pot for a while so I can thicken the trunk, then replant it in a training pot.
What is the best way to go about thickening the trunk? What kind of soil should it have during this time?

F. carica does not thicken as quick as some other F species but use similar technique - keep it in a larger pot, feed well and allow shoots to grow long before pruning. The more the top can grow the quicker the trunk will thicken.
In larger nursery pots the soil is not so critical. Different soil does not cause a trunk to thicken. Different soil just allows us to grow trees in smaller pots and will have some impact on how you need to manage watering and other care. For larger pots good quality commercial potting soil is fine.
