Ficus roots trying to escape

Shortly after I brought this ficus indoors it started pushing the roots out of soil. What's the cause? Too much/little water maybe? 20181019_095353.jpg

It is probably way too healthy! ;) What are your plans for this tree?
It is a fusuion of three branches. The plan is to airlayer in May-Jun and, maybe, add a branch or two to the trunk

Tropics here - with rain / high humidity they tend to surface
root.
We just cut off what is not needed / wanted.

* soil mix is usually - 90 % inorganic non porous and
10 % aged compost.
We have to control at times rampant trunk expansion.
