Here's my first Ficus rubiginosa (Port Jackson fig, Rusty fig) project, starting from nursery stock last spring. The last picture is from this fall. I'm really liking this species, despite the relatively large leaves. It wants to throw aerial roots out all over the place. The leaves have reduced by half, without much effort or time, so I'm hopeful.

Here are three more nursery trees that I got yesterday. I'm planning to get about a dozen trees from these over the next year.

Hi BB9,

I hadn't seen the newer pic of the ficus yet. That tree is developing rather quickly and I like the slim oval pot with it.

seeing this tree i think it has good potential and i like how you used the straw method to get aerial roots to start of parts of the tree

Thanks Wes and Zelk....that one is coming along nicely for less than a year in development. I hope the new ones follow along as quickly.

Decade-old BUMP!

@BrianBay9, do you still have these trees/grow this species?

If so, how small did the leaves reduce and do larger cuttings root (+2-3")? Normally I would prefer microcarpa varieties, but there are a lot of these mature landscape trees getting wood chipped near my work. The entire crowns were on the ground and there are some branches with good movement and taper.

Thanks!

Many circumstances have changed in my life since then, but I'm still carting one F rubiginosa around with me. I have rooted several smaller cuttings over the years - up to maybe 1 " diameter. Leaves do reduce, but never get microcarpa size. I'll get a pic posted after work. Ive still got a great base from that first one, but I've also still got the chop scars.

Some pics tonight. Range of leaf sizes. Unhealed chop scars.
