After seeing BVF’s post, I went to visit Dave in north Georgia and put deposit down on 3 trees, 1 JBP, 1 Stewartia and 1 JM last September. I patiently waited until Spring and after it warmed up, I drove up got the trees dug out on 3/7/2021. This thread is to track the journey of the JBP and I hope it is a long one!

September when I put money down.

Potted up the following day. I used Boon mix for it.

After posting under BVF’s thread, he suggested I put more soil on to cover the exposed roots so the tree has a better chance or survival. Dave offered an idea of wrapping the pot with wood frames so soil doesn’t fall off. So I did. 5 gallon of soil is just barely enough.

And here are the Japanese maple and Stewartia. Not the best angle to show the trunks though. I will try to take more over the weekend.

It’s been a month since the tree was dug out and I have not noticed any obvious change. The only thing I see is a few candels started to open up but no needles. Also a few small branches turned yellow. What are the signs of a JBP made it or died? I assume that most of the needles are still green is a good sign?
I attached one of the candles that opened up. Hope it helps.

Start feeding that bad boy if you haven't already. This year, it's going to be rebuilding it's torn up root system, so top growth will be weak... feed well now and next year will be much better, hopefully.

... and wire those seedlings and put some movement in the trunks before they grow any more!!!

Really?! I thought I should hold back on fertilizer this year.... any suggestion on what to use?

Fish emulsion weekly, plantone or hollytone in tea bags or something on the surface. You need to feed JBP aggressively for best results, and this one needs to build vigor after being collected.

Got it. I will start with fish emulsion. Thank you!
