Just a little background. I’ve done lots of grafting for other varieties especially fruit trees. I read up on how to do Black Pine bonsai, and I’ve had it demonstrated to me. I think it might be a little late in the year for grafting but we will see.

The first tree is a pine that is a project tree
(Link )with a great trunk and bark but no lower branches. I figured I’d give it a shot and try to graphs on opposite sides.

This other tree is very leggy and an older pine which I don’t think will back bud. I decided to give it a shot on two different large branches.

On the Sion I pulled a bunch of the needles and then wrapped it with grafting tape.

I did both what I call “wedge cut”. and then I put cut paste to seal it and wrapped it with grafting too.

I did one with cut paste and one I just wrapped with grafting tape.

Well done! I find the grafts in larger trunk and older bark much more difficult. The grafts on thinner branches are much easier as it is easier to match cambium.

I used some of the posts on here to get specifics. Use a chisel and a hammer and it was pretty easy

I tried a truck graft this year and it failed... looks like you tried a pretty strong scion... I might do the same next time

Did the graft on the trunk make it? I'm considering doing this on a JBP of mine in order to thicken up the base.
