We winter some of our young trees in cold greenhouses every winter. It can help trees at risk get through the winters.

All other deciduous and coniferous trees are kept outside in sheltered positions from the prevailing wind and sun, dug in and mulched with medium sifted bark. Water before deep freezes.

Our winters rarely get below -12 C though. I think yours are similar. If colder in your location, it’s time to treat your parents to a coffee and ask for use of their cold greenhouse. 😎

cheers

9?
and also some thick scar (maybe after trunk cut?),
Not absolutely clear in the photo but if that scar is low down I'd guess it shows where the tree was grown from a root cutting. We can plant a piece of root and new roots grow from the bottom and new branches grow from the top. After a couple of years we have a new tree from a piece of root. Check out how by searching root cuttings - here or elsewhere.
