I’ve been lurking for awhile, this is my first post. I have plenty of healthy, tropical prebonsai material in different stages of development. I have always wanted a buttonwood but the inexpensive material is boring and the collected material that I’ve seen has been out of my price range. Wigerts posted a couple up for clearance and I decided to get one. My short term goal is to regain some health and vigor. Maybe something like the virtual in the long run. Open to any feedback or other ideas. It will get about 8-10 hours of unfiltered sun.

If these root easily, I would try to layer it at the top to have that double trunker alone without the straight part.

Welcome to Crazy!

I may even just take it as a cutting. It is regaining health already and now is the time to work on it.

Ended up taking the top as a cutting. Repotted and changed the angle a bit. Glad I decided to repot as the pot was chock full of circling roots. And today, it flowered.

x2 on Barbados cherry. I have one and it puts out the exact same flowers as this. If your heart was set on Buttonwood I'm sure a short call to Wigerts will fix the situation....however, this is neat barbados cherry.

This isn’t a buttonwood but cool tree. Looks like a Barbados cherry.
I feel a little silly. It was on the clearance cart they have out sometimes. The guy said “you got the cherry?” And I said “no buttonwood“
I didn’t know cherry would hold deadwood like that.
I do like it.

They are great trees, grow and flower like crazy. Should do awesome in Florida, just don't let it dry out.

Yep. Barbados Cherry. I have one also. Mine is not from Wigerts, but I’ll be down there next week and plan on stopping by Wigerts. Cool place. Cool tree.

It is certainly an acerola, barbados cherry, but it is not the dwarf variety. Malphigia glabra I believe, It is the full size one known for its edible, vitamin C rich fruits. I think it is far better than a buttonwood, but thats a matter of opinion.

I should retitle this and move it to the flowering forum but I don’t know how. A little update. The cutting off of the top has taken well and I got my first fruit. Tasty.

Changing the name of the thread, there are 2 options. Just start a new thread under the new title.

Or do this: Ask Greg to fix the title, if he has the time, he does. @Bonsai Nut , then ask him to change the title. THe "@" sign plus the user's name will send an alert to the user. Bonsai Nut is Greg's, the administrator's handle.
